Mari was born and raised in Osaka. Her first job in Japan was at a food production company, before moving to Australia for one year on the working holiday program. She is now based in Fiji, supporting local women at work, including improvement of wages and salaries.
What do you think Japanese companies and/or government needs to do to help women in Japan?
Mari would like to see the government improve support for working women with children. Although maternity and child support leave exist, she still feels it is difficult for mothers in Japan to be full-time working mothers.
What advice do you have for the next generation of women in Japan?
Gender equality is not just a women’s issue. It should not be ‘this is a women’s role,’ ‘this is a man’s role.’ Society as a whole needs to change their way of thinking, to give everyone the opportunity to shine!
