Today we celebrate Junna Yamaoka. Junna is currently interning at Melanie Brock Advisory. While studying at Tokyo Women’s Christian University, she became interested in Japan-Australia relations and studied at the University of Wollongong. Junna has just graduated and is set to join one of Japan’s leading paper and pulp companies.
What do you think Japanese companies and/or government needs to do to help women in Japan?
Changing the culture of ‘overwork’ and creating a better environment for both parents, not just women, is vital. Junna hopes that Japanese society will create more flexibility in terms of working styles which will allow people to better balance career and raise children.
What advice do you have for the next generation of women in Japan?
Live with confidence and respect for yourself. Don’t be affected by ideas that you have to do something just because you are a woman. Seek advice and be passionate about taking up opportunities. Keep challenging, learning and improving - then you’ll reach your goal.
