For 25 years, Yukumi Uchide has run a day care group home in Ofunato, Iwate, for elderly dementia patients. She works hard to make sure the facility is an extension of the patient’s home. She is primary carer for her 90-year old mother, who has dementia, her father and her son.
What do you think Japanese companies and/or government needs to do to help women in Japan?
Yukimi wants to apply the lessons from 3.11. Lots was done to create respite places for tsunami survivors but it costs a lot to keep these facilities open. She would like people and organisations to visit and listen to the needs of men and women in Tohoku.
What advice do you have for the next generation of women in Japan?
Japan has always valued its food culture. Things might change but we will still have and enjoy the four seasons. I encourage people to respect nature, savour seasonal food and be grateful for what you have. These are things the elderly people I care for teach me.
